COP29, the United Nations next climate conference in 2024, is scheduled for November 11-24 in Baku, Azerbaijan, which is located at the boundary of Eastern Europe and West Asia. Azerbaijan chose Ecology Minister Mukhtar Babayev to lead the COP29 event.

The previous COP28 event, held in United Arab Emirates (UAE) in November-December 2023, attracted roughly 97,000 attendees — including heads of state, government officials, international industry leaders, private sector representatives, academics, experts, youth, and non-state actors, the UAE said.

Near the end of a crucial year 2024 in which most of the global population – from the UK, the EU and the US to India and Russia – will head to the polls. “Even if new administrations are formed, they will face the same need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and tackle global heating, the president of Cop29, Mukhtar Babayev, has said.

The Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held this year in Azerbaijan. The decision to hold COP29 was made at the COP28 plenary meeting in Dubai last December. The holding of COP29 can be considered one of the most significant events of 2024 for Azerbaijan, as well as a continuation of the country’s transition strategy to a green economy, in connection with which Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree declaring 2024 in Azerbaijan the “Green World Solidarity Year.”

Azerbaijan and Saudi Arabia can cooperate in fight against climate change

Azerbaijan and Saudi Arabia can cooperate in the fight against climate change, the head of CSC, Academic Visitor (Senior Member) of St Antony’s College, University of Oxford, UK, Professor Mohammad Nurunnabi, said in an interview with Report.

“The Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) launched in 2021 an ambitious national initiative for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that aims to combat climate change, improve quality of life, and protect the planet for future generations,” he noted.

Expectations for COP29: Participation of women from Middle East and North Africa in fight against climate change

According to the United Nations, 70% of the 1.3 billion people living in conditions of poverty are women. In urban areas, 40% of the poorest households are headed by women. Women predominate in the world’s food production (50-80 per cent), but they own less than 10% of the land.
